Siargao prepares for much bigger, exciting world sea sporting event in 2020
SURIGAO CITY – Officials of the Department of Tourism (DOT) and the provincial government of Surigao del Norte are now closely coordinating to make the annual sea sporting event — the world surfing cup and the international game fishing tournament — much more exciting in the “Paradise Island” of Siargao in Surigao del Norte province.
A series of meetings is slated this month and next for the annual big event.
The country’s surfing capital of Siargao recently landed in the world’s No. 8 spot in Conde Nast Traveler’s list of Best Holiday Destinations for 2020. The surf paradise island made the mark with its pristine beaches, and wide mangrove forests.Conde Nast already recognized Siargao as the “Best Island in Asia” in October 2018.
Top regional officials of DOT 13 led by Regional Director Mary Jean A. Camarin, Surigao del Norte Gov. Atty. Francisco T. Matugas and the province’s 1st District Rep. Francisco Jose “Bingo” F. Matugas II, mayors and local officials, and the town’s tourism officers in Siargao Island and the province are now laying down additional programs for the two big events, according toGov. Matugas, Rep. Matugas and Director Camarin.
Director Camarin told The Manila Bulletin on Friday that their agency and local government units are optimistic that close to two million arrivals will be recorded this year because of these two big sea sporting events – the world surfing cup held every October in the country’s famous “Cloud 9” in General Luna town and the International game fishing tournament in nearby Pilar town in April – good tourism infrastructures, access to air and sea travellers, and other new tourist destinations in various parts of Caraga region.
