Elon Musk’s space exploration company SpaceX has officially launched Starlink, its low-earth-orbit satellite internet service, in the Philippines. The service, originally scheduled to go live locally in 2022, is now available for those living in unserved and underserved communities across the country.
To get started with Starlink, one has to purchase a kit with an antenna and router which costs around ₱29,320 ($532 USD). Then, there is a monthly subscription fee of ₱2,700 ($49 USD) which is relatively low compared to what was expected. The hardware need to be set up by the user and there is an app for Android and iOS that helps in finding the best location for the receiver.
Subscribers in the Philippines can expect speeds between 50 Mbps and 200 Mbps which is promising. Starlink does not depend on the traditional infrastructure associated with terrestrial internet and is thus a great option for those living in remote areas where broadband access is limited or nonexistent due to geographical constraints.
